This was an excited week. Thanks Dr. Lisa Rong's and Dr. Christopher Tam's help, I was able to observe a CABG (coronary artery bypass grafting) and aortic valve replacement surgery.
From echo image, it was clear that there was a severe aortic regurgitation (AR), and some wall motions in left ventricle were not normal. Thus, the purpose of this surgery is using patient's vein in leg to bypass the blocked coronary to reflow oxygenated blood to the downstream heart tissue, and using artificial aortic valve to replace the abnormal valve to prevent aortic regurgitation. In operation room, there was a cooperative and harmonious team that did a great job to complete this tough task to save patient's life. This was my first observation on open chest surgery.
As for the research part, our team started a cooperative project with advanced image analysis lab in San Francisco. This project is trying to understand the reason of the recurrence of mitral regurgitation after using MitralClip, which is a medical device that clips two leaflets on mitral valve. Initial analysis showed that the volume, strain, and compliance of left atrium and ventricle may play vital role on the recurrence of mitral regurgitation. Furthermore, this project also try to use computational model to predict the success rate of using MitralClip to treat mitral regurgitation based on the parameter mentioned above. This project may provide new insight on precision medicine. Once the database is built, patient can be evaluated before the procedure, and the treatment can be customized to each patient.
