Week 6- Grant

Immersion is quickly coming to an end and my experience has been great. Thursday was the 1-week follow-up of our patient involved in the Sildenafil to Prevent (STOP) Clots Study at Montefiore. This is the 3rd patient enrolled in the trial and we are hoping to enroll as many as 40 LVAD patients; enrollees are either given a low dose of the drug or a placebo. After the 2-week follow-up, I will have a larger data set for my case study to analyze whether Sildenafil may lower the risk of stroke in LVAD patients.
It was interesting hearing my peers’ presentations today regarding their summer immersion research. Although we spend a lot of time together, research interests, other than at a very high level, tend to slip through the cracks when we are socializing. It was stunning to see all the types of traditional engineering (mechanical, chemical, electrical, etc.) encompass biomedical engineering and how these disciplines are applied to medicine. Students presented their work on 3D printed joint replacements, adipose tissue, and cardiomyocyte regeneration in zebrafish. I am definitely intrigued to hear more about others’ research and the BMES poster session at the end of the summer.
